Environmental School Leadership

Environmental School Leadership

Promoting green school leadership has been a key theme for HTI over the past 10 years.  HTI’s message was before its time, but with growing recognition that climate change and sustainability are two of the biggest challenges of the 21st century, education for sustainable development has become a key strategic issue for UK school leaders.

HTI believes that culture change is required on a massive scale to embed the principles of sustainable development into educational structures.  Overwhelmingly this depends on understanding, buy-in and commitment from school leaders.

The size of the problem

Despite government initiatives like the £45 billion Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, there is a huge amount that needs to be done to integrate good environmental practice into all aspects of school leadership and management.

To date there has been little incentive or encouragement for schools to waste less in terms of resources, energy and money.  The figures speak for themselves:

  • Of the total emissions of CO2 from the government estate in England and Wales 26% is attributable to school consumption patterns – around 9.245 million tonnes of greenhouse gases are spewed out into the atmosphere every year
  • 1.3m tonnes of CO2 are attributed to transporting children to school
  • Electricity eats up around £100 million of schools’ annual budgets in the UK with energy costs soaring
  • Energy consumption attributable to ICT has doubled in the last five years.
  • 0.6 million tonnes of waste are buried in our heaving landfill sites incurring charges of £18-20 million annually

Why support school leaders

School leaders have a central role in advancing the sustainability agenda, not just because schools are at the heart of the community, or because they have a significant and growing impact on the environment, or because wasteful use of resources is a huge drain on finances, but because they are a major influence on the way children choose to live and learn.

Not only is there mounting evidence that an environmentally sustainable learning environment enhances student performance, but by leading by example children absorb environmental messages that filter through to their families and local communities.  ‘Pester power’ applies just as much to the issues children care about as consumables!

This is why HTI has intensified its drive to help school leaders:

  • understand the concept of sustainability
  • develop a vision for sustainability for their schools
  • incorporate best practice environmental principles and processes into leadership and management

Environmental Initiatives

HTI’s work builds on 10 years of successful initiatives, including:
  •  www.e4s.org.uk an environmental curriculum resources website
  •  www.thinkleadership.org.uk, an interactive, online diagnostic tool developed in partnership with Severn Trent plc that helps schools to measure, benchmark and improve their environmental performance while reducing costs
  • Secondments for school leaders to work on significant projects with environmental organisations and charities

HTI is currently focusing on four development areas to assist schools:

Leadership Development

The demands placed on school leaders today are significantly different from those they had to deal with only a few years ago.  We can only expect the demands to be even greater in the future. This will require exceptional leadership.
This is what HTI develops - Exceptional Leaders.

In order for leaders and aspiring leaders to be able to access good quality and relevant leadership development opportunities, we have created leadership programmes which, whilst adhering to national guidelines, are specific to local needs.

The HTI Leadership Framework
A framework of development programmes for leaders at all levels that will:
•  Bring new ideas and a spirit of enterprise
•  Establish a culture of leadership development
•  Grow leadership talent
•  Develop the exceptional leader.

HTI and NLP have formed a working partnership to provide a more focused and innovative approach to leadership development using best practice from across the regions and a wider network.

Leadership Framework Principles
•  Responsive to national and regional issues
•  Building on the latest theories and research
•  Alignment to organisational goals
•  Accreditation towards further studies
•  A pragmatic approach to leadership development.

“Leaders best placed to help their school adapt to and deal with changing needs and demands are, and will be, ones that focus upon and sustain continuous learning of their teachers, themselves and the school as an organisation”
Louise Stoll

All of our programmes form a journey of career progression from early classroom teachers through to senior leaders who wish to explore further exceptional leadership qualities. Our leadership journey comprises of the following stages:

Take5 for Business

Looking for a unique opportunity in staff development?

Need an answer to CSR?

Why not Take5?

Take5 days out of the office to work with school management - make a difference!

The programme gives your employees innovative and challenging opportunities to develop their skills in unfamiliar environments, comprising five days typically over a five-week period. It helps differentiate you from your competitors and that is vital in attracting and retaining the best talent. The scheme will benefit the participants, your business and the school.

Providing a high quality professional development experience for your staff can be time-consuming and costly. With Take5, HTI acts as a broker, receiving requests from both schools and businesses that wish to participate. HTI matches the skills of the business participant with the school's requirements to ensure a positive and mutually beneficial union.

Take5 is structured, though flexible to suit both parties, and all the secondments are based on specific, detailed, time-based projects, in which goals are set and outcomes measured and evaluated.

Much more than a job swap, it provides you with an innovative alternative to standard training schemes, giving added value staff development for executives through secondment to schools.

And in addition, when calculating taxable profits, all of the costs associated with the business placement are tax deductible as you will be able to benefit from HTI's charitable status.

If your company is new to corporate social Responsibility (CSR) and you don't know where to start - Take5 provides the answer. Participating in the programme demonstrates CSR by providing opportunities for focused community involvement and elevating your 'business profile'.

Take5 for Education

Current reviews of education indicate that to improve employability and entrepreneurial awareness amongst young people, increased business participation in delivering the curriculum is essential. Additionally schools and businesses face many similar leadership and management challenges.

HTI's inspirational initiative Take5 is geared to improving leadership and management functions of schools and colleges to increase their capacity to provide relevant work related learning and vocational experiences.

HTI is one of the UK's longest established educational charities and has considerable experience with schools in brokering business partnerships. We have turned our pioneering secondment programme on its head to offer business employees the chance to develop their management expertise by working with school leadership teams on a range of  projects.

Take5 is a unique programme created by HTI where we ask business employees to give their time to a school to assist with a specific business orientated project in one of two ways:

Inspiring young people - During a one or two hour session, sharing personal work experiences and knowledge with groups of young people to encourage them to consider a particular career, to think about their educational options and to make informed decisions about their future.

Supporting Headteachers - Up to five days’ worth of consultancy (either in one go or over several days), helping to improve the running and leadership of a school to help address priority issues such as marketing, human resources management, financial management, strategic planning, team management or project management.

Projects have included:
            • Business planning
            • Financial management
            • Marketing & public relations
            • Human resource advice
            • Project management skills
            • Goal setting for staff & pupils
            • Strategic thinking
            • Support for new builds

What are the benefits of Take5 for schools?

            • Specialist business skills to assist in project management
            • Links with businesses in the local community
            • Opportunities to engage in cross sector dialogue
            • specific help at no financial cost to the school

How does it work?

HTI receives requests for business support from schools to work on specific projects, works with schools to ensure the right business match is sought and evaluates progress and outcomes.

Stretch assignments provide a cost-effective opportunity to harness this expertise and make a real impact in your organisation.

Why not take a look at some interesting case studies to see how stretch assignments have benefited their participants, their schools and the host businesses - click here.

" I think HTI's secondments programme for teachers and business employees are superb initiatives. If we don't have first hand experience of one another's sectors how can we hope to prepare young people adequately for the future?"  - Sir Digby Jones

“I unreservedly recommend any organisation to take an HTI secondee. I think I’d go further: any organisation that doesn’t is missing a vary valuable opportunity. Certainly the  HSBC group has benefited.” - Ray Campsie, formerly senior executive, HSBC

Issues Papers

HTI produces an annual Issues Paper written by a well known national figure and reflecting HTI's cross sector and solution based approach to key issues impacting on the national agenda. All Issues Papers are available to order online.

In 2005 Jude Kelly wrote Dare to Inspire looking at raising the aspirations of young people and encouraging them to embrace doubt, uncertainty and even failure as essential components of the creative processes that stimulate change.

In 2004 Professor Amin Rajan wrote All that Jazz to challenge thinking that leaders need skills akin to those of a jazz trumpeter to bring about effective change in business, education and the public sector.

MATD

Multi-Agency Team Development (MATD) Programme for the East Midlands.

HTI is pleased to have been awarded the contract to deliver the Multi-Agency Team Development (MATD) Programme for the East Midlands.

We have always believed in the value of cross-sector learning, in fact HTI’s original remit was to facilitate a secondment or a ‘changing place’ opportunity for the school leader to work outside and gain a richer understanding of non-educational leadership and issues pertinent to management.  Over the years our experiences have broadened with conferences focused on multi-agency working, leading groups of learners from extended schools and children’s centres and further focus on “Stretch” assignments for people to cross sectors and work in other services.

Our credentials on team training are also strong. HTI has always delivered its own team training programmes for middle and senior educational leaders and in recent years has been a successful provider of the “Working Together for Success” and 2Developing Capacity for Sustained Improvement” programmes upon which some of the structures for MATD have been built.

“The impact of WTFS has been far reaching. We now have a balanced team in place, with more responsibility resting with middle management, who know what is expected of them and what training means to the school. Morale has improved, there’s consistency, a clear vision, awareness of our strengths and we’re ready to move forward in a much more positive ways.”
Headteacher, Birmingham primary school.

The Multi-Agency Team Development (MATD) Programme has been designed by NCSL to address the challenges faced by multi-agency teams in the delivery of the Every Child Matters (ECM) agenda and the development of Extended Schools. Multi-disciplinary professionals undertaking the programme will have space to develop different ways of working, to share knowledge, ideas and information that will ensure a more coherent service provision within their communities.

The programme turns theoretical knowledge into action that delivers positive results for multi-agency teams, children, young people and families.

How is the programme structured?

The programme is experiential with learning primarily taking place through reflection and dialogue guided by skilled facilitators who will themselves be from multi-agency backgrounds.
Teams spend the first 24 hour residential session learning more about themselves and their own strengths and role within a team; and developing a project which forms the basis of their journey through the six month programme.

The programme comprises of:
  • a pre-programme personality tool and half day consultant session
  • 1 x 24hr face-to-face event
  • 3 x 1 day facilitator-led workshops
There is also the option of extra consultancy time between events to help with the project work.

Who can use this programme?

Multi-agency teams at any stage of formation who are committed to their development can apply. Teams should consist of about eight or ten members and may be focused on one school or may be drawn from across a locality. Teams should include representatives from at least three statutory government agencies, plus one extended school. Voluntary and community sector members can also take part.

Click here to read the thoughts of a group who have experienced the programme.

Children

The Sustainable Schools Detective Kit
Pupils have the chance to investigate their school’s sustainability with a new online tool launched by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) as part of its Sustainable Schools strategy. It’s designed to guide pupils through the process of measuring their school's carbon footprint and allow them to explore what can be done at an individual and school level to reduce carbon emissions. Once the assignments are completed detectives will discover the total amount of carbon dioxide their school produces as well as the size of the carbon footprint per person. From there, pupils can develop practical suggestions on ways their school can become more sustainable. The Carbon Detectives’ Kit is designed to be used by teams of Key Stage 2 and 3 pupils (7-14 year olds) led by an adult facilitator – this can be a teacher, bursar, governor or parent.

Sustainable Schools Enquiry Report published.
HTI’s submission to the Sustainable Schools enquiry by the House of Commons Education Select Committee has been recognized in the committees 7th Report 2006-7.Sustainable Schools. Are we building schools for the future?

The report asks many searching questions of the BSF programme. Many of HTI’s concerns, especially that little real effort to utilize recycled materials is being undertaken, because the programme does not specifiy challenging targets for construction companies, and HTI’s concern for the programme to be seen as an education transformation programme rather than simply a building programme, are highlighted.

Read the report

National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH)

NPQH Logo

The National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) is for those preparing for headship. It is designed to give the best foundation for leadership and the continuing improvement of our schools.

HTI has supported 4266 successful graduates of NPQH since 1997

NPQH is the leadership qualification which is required by all new headteachers taking up their first post. It is underpinned by the National Standards for Headteachers, and must be completed in a maximum of two years.

From April 2004 it became mandatory for anyone gaining headships to either be registered on the NPQH programme or have completed their training and be holding a certificate. From 2009 it will be mandatory that you have to be in possession of your NPQH certificate before you can be interviewed for your first headship positions.

NPQH is currently going through an exciting redesign which will incorporate blended learning elements, including supported self study, research and online activities, face to face training, seminars and masterclasses and placements in another context.

The Next Round of Applications

The new NPQH model has a series of pre-entry activities and resources to stimulate interest in headship and help gauge readiness to apply. These will be available from October 2007

The application form for the next cohort will be available in December 2007 and following successful application to the programme you will be invited to the entry assessment in March 2008

If you are not from the WM area, programmes are held around the country - click here to go to the NCSL page to find a session in your area.

Why Go4It

Why should you Go4it?

Go4it is unique in that it provides a single over arching award, which recognises all the disparate areas of excellent practice undertaken by both staff and students.

The school will experience a positive cultural change that will permeate the whole environment impacting on the attitudes and behaviours of students and staff alike

Students will gain important life skills that will make them more employable and fit for a competitive and increasingly global market place

Creativity, innovativeness, entrepreneurialism, go-for-it attitudes will become second nature to all in the school community

The school will be gaining a national quality kite mark, a marketable brand that demonstrates an important facet of the school to the parents, the Local Authority, Ofsted, local employers, sponsors and the wider local community.

The school community will be able to reflect and celebrate the achievements of the school, whilst also taking time to consider and develop areas for enhancement.

Meeting the Go4it criteria will provide rigorous evidence of all five national outcomes stipulated in the ‘Every Child Matters and the Children’s Act 2004.

The local community and businesses will recognise that students who have been educated in a Go4it school have had the opportunity to foster and develop the skills of innovation, creativity, judging risk, decision making, team working.

The students will leave school with a sense of ambition, purpose, optimism, self belief and a real can do attitude.

The leadership team within the school will become passionate in their determination to ‘free’ their pupils rather than ‘trap’ them inside a prescribed curriculum.

The school community will develop a can-do attitude and begin to develop a real sense of team spirit.

Achieving Go4it status will provide the school with a recognisable quality mark, that will have currency in terms of profile raising within the business and education, the local community and above all with the parents.

You will receive an innovation-inspired sculpture and Go4it certificate to display prominently in your school

Go4it also complements the contents of:
  • PSHE and Citizenship Curriculum
  • Physical Education
  • Creative and Performing Arts
  • Enterprise Education
  • Work-related Curriculum
  • Learning Outside the classroom

We are keen that children problem solve, think creatively and find things out about themselves- developing skills that will last them for life. Our journey to be ready has brought us together, united in going towards an agreed goal. Whole staff involvement has again confirmed that it’s everyone's contribution that makes the school the special place that it is.

We now have a catch phrase in the staff room -'Just GO4it Carol...' And we will.
Thank you for this opportunity.
Carol Meakins. Headteacher. St. Andrews Primary School. Eastbourne.

We believe that this is a mechanism that can help us to recognise those things that take place in school that can often be overlooked!  It has been a journey that has pulled together all efforts from across the school, increasing staff morale and contributing to a great team spirit.
Carrie Marshall Deputy Head – North Chadderton School. Oldham.

Being involved with Go4it has made a big difference, “I am the most excited I have been for a very long time.”
Julie Duckworth Headteacher – Ledbury Primary School.

For me this award starts to capture the spirit of the school, and ethos of a school in action. This award starts to recognise the aspect of wider underpinning culture beyond exam results. It recognises that staff can feel empowered and fully released in their creative energy.
Stephen Brown: Chair of the Outdoor Education Advisors Panel

Performance Management

Revised arrangements for performance management published in October 2006 will be in place by autumn 2007.

Schools and local authorities have an opportunity to ensure all teachers and headteachers are empowered and confident to engage fully with performance management so as to develop their skills and careers. This will include better planning at the start of the cycle and greater transparency, consistency and fairness in assessments at the end of the cycle. It will also provide improved access to continuous professional development and other support that teachers need to carry out their jobs effectively. Revised professional standards for teachers, setting out what is expected of teachers throughout their careers, will provide a backdrop to these discussions.

Sponsorship & support for our work

HTI is a not-for-profit social enterprise with charity status. As an organisation we are constantly active in creating opportunities, events and support materials to help us in our work to bridge the gap between business and education.

Far sighted-organisations who are actively involved in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) see the value it brings to them, their employees, their community and the impact it has on the bottom line.

They see CSR not as obligatory, but an opportunity

We need your support, particularly if you are from the private sector, to help fund our work. This support my take the form of:

Sponsorship ... of such things as research publications, launches, events, newsletters.

Donations ... to help fund the activities of the HTI Trust, including research studies and the work of fellowships.

Gifts in kind ... to help HTI with the costs of its activities - such as the provision of launch venues, taking on the printing costs of a publication, provision of refreshments at an event

Global Leadership Programmes

HTI is working closely with GEMS Education on the design and delivery of an exciting programme of professional development for school leaders in Dubai and ultimately in GEMS international schools across the world

GEMS has brought a new dimension to education through an enterprising blend of innovation combined with high educational standards. HTI aims to provide a framework for ongoing research and professional development that ensures GEMS remains at the leading edge of quality and service.

Go4It and Business

How Businesses can support Go4it

We believe young people who have been given the opportunity to experience being educated in a Go4it school will be ones that will demonstrate positive attitudes and attributes in the work force.  They will bring to the workplace good communication, problem-solving, leadership and teamwork skills.  They will be ready to accept a challenge and take on responsibility.

“If Go4it is all about ‘might do, can do, ‘wanna’ do attitudes’, then as many schools as possible should have the opportunity to give it a go and employers should do as much as they can to support them.” Roy Jones, Scottish Power Learning.

How will you recognise a pupil from
Go4it school?

These pupils;
  • gain in positive attitudes such as confidence, self-esteem and self awareness.
  • are able to demonstrate increasing self-reliance, determination, commitment and perseverance.
  • are able to demonstrate the key skills of good communication, problem-solving, leadership and team work.
  • show an understanding of the importance of self discipline, timekeeping, negotiation, participation and trust.
  • are ready to analyse their own strengths and accept positive criticism.
  • are ready to accept challenge and take on responsibilities; to become leaders or play a lesser role when appropriate.
  • are aware of the impact of their actions on others and are generous in giving their support when it is needed
  • applaud and acknowledge the achievements of others, modify their own behaviour to achieve the best results and challenge intolerance or lack of understanding in others.
  • can positively present their skills and achievements to others

There are a number of benefits for businesses like Scottish Power Learning being involved with education - personal development of our own staff, helping them to understand the education system and opportunities for staff to get involved in young people which helps with recruitment for the future.
The Go4it awards are really good because it shows that at last there is creativity, there's innovation. It allows young people to get involved and gives them a real taster for getting involved with business, for now and for the future.
Roy Jones - Scottish Power Learning

The pupils from Go4it schools will have had experiences which, when related through their ‘curriculum vitae’ will tell prospective employers more about them and their abilities. They will become better citizens through greater understanding and closer ties with their community and local organisations.

If these are the capabilities that you need in your workforce then why not support your local school to become a Go4it school?

For £750 you can sponsor the cost of registration for a local school. This will give them access to resources and support to work towards becoming a Go4it school.

Working Together for Success (WTfS)

WTfS Image

The primary aim of Working Together for Success (WTFS) is to build highly effective teams that will improve the working environment of schools and outcomes for staff, pupils and the school community. It enables members of the senior leadership team (SLT) to develop their team-working skills and behaviours so they can create and lead more effective teams within the school and across schools.

The programme focuses on team working analysis, team development and builds team processes for the senior leadership by:

  • » developing team potential whatever the starting point
  • » developing individuals as members of teams
  • » enhancing whole team confidence and cohesion
  • » finding ways to support and challenge each other as team members
  • » equipping the SLT with skills and behaviours for more effective team working
  • » enabling teams to regularly review team practices

For further information on how to apply please contact Anna Rushbrooke

A Working Together for Success Case study

Caroline Clarke, headteacher at Woodhouse Primary School in Birmingham, had been working with her senior management team – two assistant headteachers and a bursar - for almost six years.

They all believed they worked well as a team, but in 2006 were faced with a series of challenges – including a disappointing Ofsted - that prompted them to re-evaluate the way they operated.

"One of the things highlighted by Ofsted was the need to redress the balance of teaching experience and delegate some of the leadership responsibility away from the senior leadership team, so I appointed four phase leaders to take responsibility for teaching and learning at foundation, infant, lower junior and upper junior stages. I wanted CPD for the senior leadership team that would complement existing CPD, as well as support and develop a real team ethos right the way through the school. WTfS really seemed to fit the bill.

The first module, where we analysed the dynamics of effective team-working and what it meant to us, was a particularly energising experience and immediately gave us lots of ideas. The second provided a range of tools to give us a structured, focused approach to problem solving, team building and coaching, while the third gave us the opportunity to focus on two areas we were particularly interested in - emotionally intelligent teams and coaching.

The impact of WTFS has been far reaching. We now have a balanced team in place, with more responsibility resting with middle management, who know what is expected of them and what training means to the school. Morale has improved, there’s consistency, a clear vision, awareness of our strengths and we’re ready to move forward in a much more positive ways."

HTI's Environmental Pedigree

HTI has been at the forefront of promoting green school leadership since 1997, when it was awarded environmental trust status with a remit to develop high quality environmental leadership resources for schools.

The HTI Trust was registered with Entrust under Landfill Tax Credit Scheme. Initially working with Biffa Waste services and Severn Trent Water, a website for disseminating information about sustainable development was established.

The site was further developed with support from timber, construction, plastics, paper, glass and tyre manufacturing industries and launched as www.e4s.org.uk, an environmental information resource for schools.

The partnership between the HTI Trust and Severn Trent plc was further developed as a strategic alliance to promote environmental sustainability to school leaders. Both organisations recognise that caring for the environment is an increasingly pressing global issue. School leaders play a crucial role in promoting sustainable development for the future and are required by Government to support its efforts in this area.

Recognising a need to enhance understanding of this issue amongst school leaders, HTI and Severn Trent collaborated on the development of a web based Environmental Toolkit www.thinkleadership.org.uk.

The interactive Think Leadership website enables schools to assess their performance in the areas of energy consumption, air quality, biodiversity, water consumption and waste minimisation and recycling and pupil activities.
DfES Asset Management Plan (AMP) data stored on the site enables schools to undertake a benchmark analysis of their environmental performance against similar schools, locally and nationally. The web site creates basic action plans automatically for schools.

The Esmee Fairbairn Foundation provided funding to develop a series of one day pilot training programmes on environmental sustainability for headteachers and governors in the West Midlands. Thinking Sustainably - a one day training programme for headteachers and governors, has run successfully for more than 80 schools.

In partnership with Cambridge University Programme for Industry (CPI) and Durham LA and with support from the DfES and Cisco Systems Inc. a further professional development programme has been created - Leading for the Future. This 2.5 day face-to-face training programme split over four months will enable leadership teams to understand the development needs of their schools in terms of campus, curriculum and community and prepare them for addressing sustainability through the Building Schools for the Future Programme.

Most recently HTI has launched an Environmental Sustainability Forum Group to transfer best environmental practice from business into education and influence government thinking on sustainability. HTI is also piloting an exciting Greener Communities initiative where businesses can have a powerful team building event and make an enormous impact on a local school environment.
